"Career Success? Depends on Who You Know","

This is one of those phrases that has proven to be true time and time again.

Not only can knowing someone get you a job a lot quicker than submitting resumes, it more often than not can garner a bigger salary for you as well.
If an employer can get you to work for them for cheap, they will.

It is risky business for any company to hire someone off the street without knowing whether or not that person is going to workout.
They are more than happy to bring in a friend or associate of an already established employee and pay him/her asking price.
If a trusted and successful employee recommends you for a position at his/her company, you automatically earn trust and respect and are perceived to be a highly capable candidate.
Be a good colleague and build relationships with individuals at work and at school and other social events who can help you to get where you want to be.
I have always wanted to work in the HR industry and Benefits, but did not get there until I made my goals known to others that I had built relationships with.
A mentor not only shows you the ropes, but a good mentor will introduce you to his/her colleagues and associates thereby broadening your networking opportunities and thus the scope of your potential success.
Your mentor is also in a position to recommend you for greater career opportunities that may open up.

Success Depends On Preparation

"Success Depends On Preparation", I am a big believer in contingency and backup plans, and then backups for the backups! After I helped negotiate and organize a conference, the hotel staff presented me, as a thank you, a flask inscribed, "The Ultimate Backup Plan.
Confucius said, "Success depends upon previous preparation, and without such preparation there is sure to be failure.
Leaders still run meeting without creating agendas, and the result of that is almost always wasting time, inefficient, overlooking essential details, and less than optimum accomplishments.
While in an ideal world that may be true, most situations are not ideal.
" That is because in companies, items are ideally delegated to skilled and trained workers, whose job it is to accomplish particular tasks.
Since volunteers serve voluntarily, and almost always have other responsibilities in their "real world," it is far more difficult as well as risky to depend on delegating to volunteers.
This often creates personality and attitudinal difficulties, with things such as resentments and blame often replacing achievement and thanks.
This may or may not encompass their vision for the organization, but must be goal oriented.
From that, they must create "Plan A," Backup Plan B," "Plan C," etc.
A firm time line, and review schedule should be included as well.

Organized leaders create one other form of preparation that I refer to as the "What if?" scenario.
This last detail is often the difference between an organizational disaster and a huge success!
