PENALIZED FOR BEING MARRIED

My wife and i have been married for about 35 years and now at retirement age are getting penalized for being married. I get ss and a pension of about 1400 dollars. My wife because I make that much only gets 50 dollars ssi . If we were not married I would still receive the same amount. She would be abe to get help with housing, medical, food, and a few other things she needs to survive. She has Myotonic Dystrophy a disease of the muscles and needs help if she leaves her wheelchair to go to toilet, or bed. But because I make so much she can't get any help that I know of they say its because she didn't make any money the last five years she worked, what about the 30 years she worked and paid social security, what was that for.
So now we are seriously thinking about getting a divorce just so she can get what she is intitled too, as a american citzen who has paid into the ss system all her life while she was able to work. If she were to get what she is intitled too. She would not have to depend so much on my income. I believe this has a detremental effect on people wanting to get married its to costly in the long run and makes a lot better sense to just shack up and share you get more food stamps, more money, and more peace of mind and most marriages don't last and the ones that do are doomed in later years. If we weren't married our income would essentially double. If social security would look at her medical record instead of her work record they would see she wasn't able to work since 1998. therefore could not pay in to social security and should get disability.
